FC Mirage U16 Boys – Rockford Puma Cup College Showcase

This weekend in Rockford, the FC Mirage U16 boys became the first Mirage team to compete in a College Showcase, a wonderful feat for our young club history. Eight players on the U16 team are the final active Mirage players that have played under Coach Seyo at U8 & U9, so this was a very special achievement for us.

Fresh off of spring break, and plagued by illness and niggling injuries, the team was not at full strength going into the weekend, giving U15 players a chance to play up and help cover for missing players.

In Game 1 against Legacy FC, Mirage started the match with wonderful attacking soccer, and took a first half lead through a Ryan Donohue outside of the foot chip. A deflected shot, late in the first half, made the score 1-1 at half time. Mirage pushed for the second goal, and goalkeeper Vince Hackl made three fantastic saves to keep the team in the game. Both teams were unable to break the deadlock, so the game finished 1-1.

In Game 2 against Fondy Phoenix from Wisconsin, a well defended first half, saw Mirage go down 1-0 off of a penalty kick due to a handball. On the other end, two penalty kick opportunities for Mirage were dismissed by the referee. Fatigue really set in on the team in the second half as they pushed to find the tying goal. A late goal from Fondy sealed the game as a 2-0 loss for Mirage.

Game 3 against longtime tournament rivals Crystal Lake Force, was a thrilling 4-3 encounter watched by college coaches. Mirage took the lead in the first half through a Zarko Pavlovic penalty kick before a late goal for CLForce brought the game to 1-1 going into half time. The night of rest clearly showed on the players, as Mirage started the second half with a flowing attack, that lead to a 2-1 lead through Mark Dobos. CLF tied the score 2-2 after a defensive miscommunication and then scored one more to make it 3-2 for CLF. Another Mark Dobos goal brought the game to 3-3, and through a counter attack and some wonderful combination passing, a Keenan Chiarieri header in the last minute of the game sealed the game 4-3 for Mirage.

Praise to the boys on their performance this weekend. This is a good step for the future of the team and the club.

Go Mirage!
